Superior Hiking Trail

Last weekend, Brian visited us in Duluth. John had to work on Saturday (so that we can take some time off to go camping/grouse hunting in the BWCA this weekend), so Brian and Beth headed up the North Shore to hike eleven miles from Silver Bay to Tettegouche State Park. The fall colors were fabulous!

Once we finally found the trailhead, we enjoyed all the great views.

Looking west over Bean Lake.

Wow...was it ever WINDY at the overlook above Bean Lake!

Bear Lake. Nope...we didn't see any bears. We did see a ruffed grouse on the trail though. Why is this lake called Bear Lake? Brian surmised it was because of the bare cliffs on the north side and whoever named it couldn't spell.

At the top of Mount Trudy overlooking MicMac Lake. Have I mentioned yet how great the fall colors were?

Lake Superior as viewed from the top of Raven Rock.

Coming down The Drainpipe (backwards, I guess?!). It was steep!!!!

Additional evidence that we really did climb down The Drainpipe.

Baptism River suspension bridge.

Crossing the bridge.

Baptism Falls. Highest falls located entirely within the state of Minnesota (yes, there are higher falls on the border with Canada). From here we hiked out to the Tettegouche rest stop, where Beth realized she left her car keys back in Brian's car. Thus, she had her first ever hitch-hiking experience with a very kind woman who drove her back to Silver Bay.
