Great Mysis Hunt of 2007

Last weekend, Feb. 16-18, we drove to the Trout Lake Research Station in Seyner, Wisconsin, in an attempt to find Mysis relicta, a freshwater shrimp that Beth needs to use in some age-0 lake trout foraging trials she is conducting in the lab this spring.

Plotting out our route. Mustang survival suits rock.

Trout Lake generously lent us the use of their snowmobile, hauling sled, survival suits, ice picks, and a chainsaw with an extended 36" blade.

John heroically cutting a 3.5' square hole through 24" of ice. Needless to say, it was very tough work. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we only caught about a dozen very gravid (pregnant) shimp. Not nearly enough for my trials. I'm still working on coming up with "Plan B." Oh well, at least it was fun being somewhere that had a little snow.

Nice to see that you got some of the white stuff. Was wondering if you were ever going to write anything again.
