My current job
Some of you may wonder what I do at work these days. Currently, I am testing the reaction distance of age-0 lake trout (age-0 refers to the first few months after hatching). I test the lake trout using different light levels and turbidities to determine their visual acuity to prey. This information is important for creating spatial bioenergetics and foraging models.
This picture shows the "foraging arena". I use a video camera (located at the top) to record the attack sequence, and later load digital video onto my computer to analyze the angles, speed, and distances prior to attack.
This picture is better at showing the color of the LED lights. They are in the 480-520 nm wavelength range, which I chose because it is very similar to the wavelenghts in Lake Superior at depths greater than 40 m.
Here is a picture of the age-0 lake trout. Sorry it is so blurry, but these guys really move. They are about two inches long right now, and are voracious feeders. They are also quite cute, in my opinion--I especially like their parr marks, which will disappear as they age.

Those fish are "cute."
How big will they be in another year?
