One Year Anniversary Camping Trip

This past weekend, we paddled and portaged through a small chain of lakes in the Superior National Forest, just west of Grand Marais. We did a bunch of fishing, reading, and eating...overall, we had a great time (although it was a bit chilly--but not nearly as cold as our wedding day).

Fishing on Talus Lake. I hooked into a 20+ inch rainbow trout. It was huge!! Unfortunately, I practiced "long-distance" catch & release and didn't actually land it. I got it up to the boat several times so we did get several good looks at it before it threw the hook.

Our bent-shaft paddles.

We caught two lakers and cooked them up for a delicious shore lunch.

All weekend, fire-fighting helicopters flew overhead from refueling at Devil Track Lake to fight the Ham Lake fire. The fire is the largest and most costly in Minnesota since 1918, and it has destroyed over a hundred buildings, many up the Gunflint Trail. Unfortunately, it was likely started by a campfire.

On Saturday, the wind was calm and we could see a large smoke column from the Ham Lake fire.

Pretty sunset on Kemo Lake.

Our trusty old Grumman and Kemo Lake.

A keeper!

Cooking up some pasta for dinner.

Lilia says, "Hello Auntie Beth!" I asked her if she wants to learn from you how to catch a fish, and she said, "Yes, I want to catch a pish."

Looks as if it was a nice trip . . . and unlike your wedding day, no rain.
