Trout fishing in the Superior National Forest

This past weekend, we took a couple days off from work and went trout fishing in the Superior National Forest.

The weather could have been better. It rained 3 of the 4 days we were there. And of course, I forgot my rain coat, so we had to invest in this $3 poncho at the Grand Marais Hardware Hank. Also, check out our very luxurious, car-camping tent that we purchased this past spring. Yes, we have room for an air mattress, clothes, and even a place to play cards.

On Friday (the only nice day we had weather-wise), we took a "road" (yes, the so-called road is pictured above) into [Classified Information] Lake. It was a beautiful spot with lots of trout which is why I can't tell you the name.

A picture of [Classified Information] Lake. There were some beautiful bluffs, and it was located in a very quiet location. Lots of wildlife...and oh yes, did I mention there were some trout?

Beth holding a brown trout that she caught. It was the most amazing take--John said, "hey, why don't you cast your wooly bugger over in the shadow about 2' from shore." So I did, and as soon as the bugger hit the water, the water exploded as this fine-looking, fat trout struck the fly. It was exciting to land my first big fish of the summer (after several near-misses this spring).

Close up of the big, bad brown trout.

We also caught several splake that we took back to camp for dinner. Splake, otherwise known as "Frankencharr", is a cross between a lake trout and a brook trout, both members of the charr family, that is raised in hatcheries for the sole purpose of catching and eating.

Mmmm....fried splake.

The post-consumption carnage.

Saturday we went to Bogus Lake, which was indeed bogus, since we didn't catch anything. We did find this emerging dragonfly, though. Notice its wings haven't dried yet.

Next, we went fishing on a lake near our campsite and had fun catching rainbows.

The catch.

The release.

I, too, know the value of a good $3 poncho! Great photos & the fishing looked impressive at "No Name Lake." Love, Mom

Hi,

I enjoyed the pictures of your fishing trip.
Did the fish taste good?

How much did the big rainbow trout weigh?

Love,
Gram

Hi "Kids,"

Gram and I are at the rehab center looking at your fishing trip pictures. We both enjoyed them very much.

Thank you and please post more things for Gram to see and practice
reading.

Love,
Dad

"Wooly bugger"? Sounds like terms that Scotsmen would use to swear at each other. Also, how did you manage to catch the headless fish?

And $3 seems a little extravagant for the rain poncho. If I remember correctly, Mom preferred garbage bags with head and arm holes . . .
