I haven't posted much lately because all I've done is write. First, I applied for a NASA Earth Science Fellowship in early Feb., then I worked on my written exams which I just submitted to my advisors last Thursday, and now I am working on applying for another University of Minnesota fellowship. So, basically I'm sick of writing. This is the first weekend I've refrained from doing anything related to grad school in a long, long time.
But we've been doing some fun stuff lately, too. Last weekend, while we were in Duluth, John and I drove to Boulder Lake to take Nora skiing (dogs are allowed on their ski trail twice a week). Last week, I went for a massage, thanks to John's excellent Valentine's Day gift. Yesterday, it was beautiful outside, so Nora and I took a long walk across Clark Lake, met up with Mom and then went to visit the parentals. John, Dad, and Nora went ice-fishing for awhile, so I walked out to check and see if they were catching anything (they weren't), and then walked Nora back with me. Today, we went out to the Wolf Lake Trail system (about a 30 minute drive from the cabin), where we skiied for just over an hour and tried to wear Nora out. Compared to yesterday, which was sunny, clear, and very warm in the sun, today has been foggy and the trees have a very heavy layer of hoar frost. Very pretty for skiing, and now the sun is just starting to pop out. All in all, a good weekend.

How far out on the lake does one ice fish? Do you basically go to the same places you'd go if you had a boat?
Yes, ice fishing usually happens at the same best locations as when there is open water. We were fishing along a reef in about 10' of water. In late winter, as soon as melt water starts flowing into the lakes again, the panfish bite will improve considerably.
This is probably the worst time of the year to ice fish, but what the hell, yesterday it was a balmy 32 degrees out so why not take advanatge of the warm weather.
Nora, the wonder dog, did find a dead sunfish on the ice to roll in so at least somebody did catch a fish!
How does a dog "roll in" a frozen fish?? (though I can attest that she did -- could definitely smell it!!) Mary
