24-week pregnancy update

I had my monthly appointment with my family practice doctor today. Things went okay--I'm gaining weight, my blood pressure is good, the fundal height is right on the mark, and the baby's heartbeat is strong (140 bpm). However, my blood sugar was borderline high, so there is some concern about gestational diabetes. I have a lab appointment in two weeks for a glucose test, but in the meantime, my doctor said to cut back on carbs, eat protein at every meal, and limit portion sizes while eating more frequently throughout the day.

All good advice, and probably what I should be doing anyway, but I have a confession to make. Well, actually a couple of confessions. First of all, I really like to eat cereal in the morning. For months, I have been telling myself that I should eat something other than all those refined carbs first thing in the morning...but I like the taste and I really like the convenience. And I just can't see myself eating eggs every morning, so I'm trying to think of some other sources of protein I can eat for breakfast. So far I've come up with peanut butter toast and cottage cheese...any other suggestions out there?

My second confession is that I've developed quite the sweet tooth with this pregnancy. It doesn't help that I'm hungry all the time, and that we have pounds of frozen apples in the freezer that I keep making into apple pies and apple crisps. It also doesn't help that my mom lives just down the road and that there are almost always homemade cookies in her cookie jar.

On the plus side, the more I get to know my new doctor, the more I really like her. One concern I had is that the hospital has a "clear fluids only" policy for laboring women. I thought this was ridiculous...my whole life I've had to eat every 3 hours or else get very crabby and very weak, and now suddenly, when I need all this strength and energy (not to mention a positive outlook) to push out a baby, I can't eat?!? So I talked to the doc about it and she said that's not her policy--she encourages all her patients to eat and drink throughout labor to keep their strength up. So that's obviously a relief...I was starting to think I would have to sneak in some snacks when no one was looking.

My advice is to get everything in writing that you and your doctor agree on and bring it with you to the hospital...otherwise a nurse will tell you that is their policy and ya-de-dah you can't eat/drink etc.

I craved sweets this pregnancy too. Then again, I always crave sweets...

I had gestational diabetes with Emma, and I also LOVED cereal in the morning. Once I was diagnosed with the diabetes, for breakfast every morning I was allowed a slice of wheat toast with peanut butter, and I had half a glass of the Carb Countdown Chocolate Milk. It tastes pretty good and has a LOT of protein in it.

My morning sugar numbers were always high though, so after my first two weeks on my new diet, I had to resort to insulin shots at night time. It really was not that bad.

I also craved sweets the entire pregnancy with Emma and found the diet pretty tough at first, but I got used to it. And the good news was that I did not get the diabetes with Sarah- I think I watched more what I ate with her in the beginning so I would not get the diabetes again!

If you do get diagnosed with it, do not fret. Emma was only 6lb13oz when they told me she was an 8 lb baby at 38 weeks. I think I just had a ton of water retention so they thought Emma was bigger than she was.

Anyway, email me if you do get it and I can answer all your questions!

A Dr. question (can't help it . . . ) . . . was it a fasting blood sugar? Did they also check your hemoglobin A1c?

When Alesa went into labor we stopped by the Holiday station to grab some vitamin water. As I closed the door, my sweet, sweet laboring wife suggests some gummy worms as well. After being admitted a very nice an inocent intern enters our room and asks us if she can be a part of our deliver. Alesa calmly says: "just a minute", pukes up all the gummy worms in the trash, "I don't think so". So just lay off the gummy worms:) Nate

Oh, and did you forget how science works when you got prego? What about repeatability of measurements? I'd have it checked again. Kindly, Nate
