Unifying the unconnected

I'm having having problems with my written exam. I am supposed to write a grant proposal on the work I've done for my Ph.D., which I have done, and both of my advisors are pleased with my writing and data summary. Unfortunately, they also both agree that I need a better unifying theme to my thesis. The problem? My research involves three completely separate projects that will comprise four (or if one of my advisors has his way, five) chapters of my dissertation. One co-advisor has suggested, "space, time, and scale" as a unifying theme (somehow, I have found this a bit vague and unhelpful), and another co-advisor has suggested "the influence of abiotic factors vs. biotic factors" (also vague and not so helpful). Perhaps I should just use "aquatic ecology" as my unifying theme?!?

Grrr...back to the drawing board...or more precisely, back to the textbooks in ecological theory.

Why does it have to be unified? I had two projects as a grad student and they didn't have anything to do with each other, other than that they both had to do with thermodynamics. I admit writing the introduction wasn't so easy, though . . .
